Guidelines for Prospective Students

  • Thank you for your interest in my research group.
  • I typically recruit 1 or 2 new students a year. Sometimes the students I recruit are already at KU doing BS or MS degrees. A typical student I would recruit has most (not necessarily all) of the following traits:
  1. Top academic credentials. For example, they should have a very high GPA at one of their country's top universities. They must also be able to meet the admission requirements for the KU EECS program in terms of GRE, TOEFL, etc.
  2. Strong aptitude for research. For a post-MS student, this is usually demonstrated by a publication record in a top IEEE conference or journal. For a post-BS student, this is usually demonstrated by interesting projects they have completed and strong letters of recommendation. I view writing as an essential skill and I expect to see evidence of quality writing from prospective students.
  3. A drive to be a leader. I seek students that have specific short- and long-term goals for making a positive impact on the world of digital communications (a professor, leading researcher, entrepreneur, industry executive, etc.). Their academic and research accomplishments should demonstrate that they have the passion, drive, and aptitude to accomplish these goals.
  • I typically work with students on an informal basis for a semester or so before offering them a GRA position. For example, I may first offer a GTA position, or assign a project that will give the student an opportunity to clearly demonstrate their aptitude for research.
  • I cannot reply to every e-mail I receive. I will only usually reply to students I am personally interested in recruiting. At times I can get a large number of such e-mails so please do not take it personally if I cannot respond. Thank you for your understanding.
  • If you do decide to e-mail me, please send a resume which clearly indicates your GPA, GRE scores, awards, and publications. Also, please indicate why you are contacting me in particular. (If you are sending a form letter to a dozen professors, I can tell this quite easily and you probably won’t get a reply.)
